Jeremy Olander
2011-11-07
London’s Alexandra Palace hosts the first Together Winter Music Festival at the end of the month, and we continue to find out more about the top acts with our third interview: Jeremy Olander. Championed by WMF headliner Eic Prydz as “the next big thing”, Olander has three top two records under his belt. We found out more.
How are you doing today?
I am very well, thank you. I’m in Milan at the moment and the weather, as opposed to back in Stockholm, is great. No complaints. Can you describe your sound in three words?
That’s difficult, but I’d like to think that it’s eclectic, emotional and unpredictableSweden is exporting some great DJ’s and producers at the moment. Why do you think this is?
I get that question a lot and the only thing I can think of is our ridiculously long winters that force us to stay inside and feel generally depressed. Don’t get me wrong, I love it that way. It brings a lot of contrast to our lives and makes us appreciate the warmth that much more. I also think it brings a lot of creativity out of you and inspires you as you spend your days longing for those summer days.Which other Swedish DJ’s should we keep an eye on?
Erik Hultsberg. He’s is definitely one to keep an eye on and has been making some great stuff lately! He’s got tons of emotion in his tracks.[Prydz] has been my biggest inspiration and role model ever since I got started.
How did you join the Pryda family?
Well, I guess it came from me essentially stalking Eric back in Stockholm and generally trying to get my name out there while developing and honing my skills as a producer. It was also a lot about timing, help and support from a lot of people. After a few years I was introduced to a friend of a friend that ended up sending some of my stuff to Eric. I guess he liked what he heard and some time later I was approached by his management and was offered to join the team. A mind-blowing moment to say the least and something I will remember for the rest of my life. What is it like being mentored by our headliner, Mr Eric Prydz?
Pretty unreal. He’s always been my biggest inspiration and role model ever since I got started. Having the chance to play alongside him and get his take on stuff I make is just mental. I couldn’t ask for anything or anyone better.Name somewhere where you would love to DJ but have not yet had the opportunity?
People keep telling me South Americans really know how to party. The crowds are supposedly very up for it. Plus, I’ve never been there. I’ve also heard great things about Australia, so that’s definitely a second place I’d really like to play. What has been a highlight of 2011?
Creamfields in the UK without a doubt! I’ve always wanted to go there, but it never happened and then this year didn’t only get to go to enjoy the shows, but I got to play the Pryda Arena with Eric, Sebastien Leger, Pete Tong, Joris Voorn, James Zabiela and Sasha. Even though I played the opening set, the tent was packed and it was an amazing feeling seeing how many people recognised my music and how they responded to it.What does 2012 have in store for you?
Not sure what I am allowed to give away here, but hopefully keep touring all over the world and produce great music.Could you tell us about your new EP, ‘Fairfax/Rypamont’?
Yeah, well Fairfax is a more progressive peak time kind of track. It’s named after my birthplace, which is Fairfax, Virginia, USA. We moved to Stockholm soon after I was born though. For tickets and the latest news to the Together Winter Music Festival, go to www.togetherwmf.com.
