The Rocket EP follows hot on the heels of Working For A Nuclear Free City’s debut and features four new tracks, none of which appeared on that eponymous long player. Despite the short time between first and second releases, the new material, whilst fitting into the groove left by WFANFC, does not feel like off-cuts from an album session and suggests a band unwilling to rest on their creative laurels and wait for people to look their way.

Their debut album was a promising affair, albeit with an unfinished or underdone air to some tracks. This EP takes that promise and finishes the job. The opening title track is an understated swirl, as treated vocals spar with a piano hook whilst the 3 EPs era Beta Band look on. “Heaven Kissing Hell” has feet in both titular camps, a woozy spoken word intro becomes a confused psychedelic racket. Also very good is “Waiting Game”, a cinematic marriage of “Nightclubbing” by Primal Scream and Lalo Shiffrin.

This is low key stuff, but there is a widescreen evocation and depth of imagination to this EP and to WFANFC in general. With a continued upward trajectory the next release can be awaited with bated breath.
