Hamburg electronic duo Digitalism have found their popularity continues well after the release of their album Idealism last year with more festival bookings and the release of this five-track EP featuring four remixes of crowd-favourite “Pogo”. As with most EPs like this, listening to the whole thing in one go is “Pogo” overload, however in isolation there are three solid remixes and a welcome bonus track.
First up is Digitalism’s own Robotics remix which puts a stutter into their synth-saturated production and Jen Moelle’s vocals. It’s an approach Justice have used to excellent effect and it transfers onto “Pogo” for improved moshing antics on the dancefloor. Brazilian indie-electro act CSS adds a playful guitar twist on the main electronic hook which makes it stand out from the other re-interpretations as providing a more human touch to the compterised effects dominated others.

Kitsune’s Hey Today! version is all very SebastiAn of the Ed Banger stable with cut up, glitchy electro breathing new life into the track, re-using only the vocals. Beni’s Re Edit Re Work Re Mix is the sole disappointing effort, proving to be almost as cumbersome as the subheading in its uninspiring pasting of the lyrics all over an infectious beat. They would have been better left off altogether.
The release also includes Digitalism’s “Rewind” version of “Zdarlight” which the band have been dropping in their DJ sets. Here it sounds a little too similar to the remixes of “Pogo” to really be called a new track as such, but it will please completists — a lot like the EP overall. There will be fans who feel the need to own all of Digitalism’s work, will buy this EP and get the most from it. Anyone with even a more marginally passing interest should probably have a listen and only pay to download the tracks they like.
